"Humour Me is a charity event where a group
of brave CEOs and stand-up comedians come together to raise money for worthy causes.
Humour Me applies a twist to the standard stand-up routine by bringing together both professional comedians and influential, high-profile amateurs to perform together."
THE PROJECT
Since it's inception in 2011, Humour Me has raised over 13 million dollars in support of some incredible causes including Blessings in a Backpack, CAMH, Covenant House, Dixon Hall, Eva’s Initiatives, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada, SickKids, Sinai Health Foundation, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Trails Youth Initiatives.
For the 2018 event, custom animations and illustrations were created in order to help support the charity's identity and help bring lighthearted elements into the brand.
THE MASCOT
For the animation, we wanted to create a main character for the animation to focus on. By using the black circle from the Humour Me logo, I created a simple mascot that could be used to represent the CEOs that are a part of the event.
The simple character supports the flat style of the animation, and the ball shape lends itself to playful and bouncy movements which echo the fun nature of the Humour Me brand.
A couple designs I presented for the humour me ball character. In the end, we decided to keep the design as simple as possible.
THE ANIMATION
The main animation created was for the opening of the show. We wanted to show Humour Me character flying through Toronto, spreading laughter as others interact with it. Finally, our main character leaps out of his plane, landing onstage of the Elgin Winter Garden Theatre, and collecting his trophy. The curtain falls, revealing the Humour Me logo, which is then followed by the lifting of the actual curtain at the live event.
The animation introduces the show in a lighthearted, humorous fashion, a suitable set up for the comedy showcase that is to follow.
